The Series

What Is Lanterns About?

Lanterns is DC Studios' prestige take on the Green Lantern mythos and a flagship entry in the new DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Forget the cosmic pageant for a moment: season 1 drops two space cops into the American heartland, where the murder of a local farmer pulls Hal Jordan and John Stewart into a dark, True Detective-flavored mystery that reaches far beyond one small town — with the Macon family sitting at the dead center of the case.

Kyle Chandler brings weathered, world-weary gravitas to Hal Jordan — the greatest Green Lantern of his generation, now sidelined and running on fumes. Aaron Pierre's John Stewart is the precise opposite: a disciplined former Marine and architect, new to the ring and unwilling to hero-worship his mentor. The show is led by showrunner Chris Mundy (Ozark), with Damon Lindelof and comic writer Tom King among the writers, and produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios.

We're covering every episode as it airs: spoiler-full recaps, ending explanations, character breakdowns and the Easter eggs casual viewers will miss.

The Core Dynamic

Hal Jordan vs John Stewart

The whole series is built on this collision. Here's the comic history and what it means for the show.

HAL JORDAN

  • The original modern Green Lantern — chosen by Abin Sur's ring in 1959.
  • Test pilot instincts: flies first, thinks later, somehow still right.
  • History of greatness and self-destruction — Parallax, the fall, the comeback.
  • In the show: an aging legend who's lost his way, stuck on Earth.
VS

JOHN STEWART

  • Architect and Marine — recruited as Hal's backup and refused to be one.
  • Structure and will: his constructs are engineered, not improvised.
  • The Lantern most fans raised on Justice League Unlimited call their favorite.
  • In the show: the rookie who might be better at the job than his mentor.

On the page, Hal and John have spent decades trading the ring, the spotlight, and a grudging respect. Lanterns flips it into a murder-mystery buddy cop story: Hal needs John's discipline, John needs Hal's instinct, and neither wants to admit it. The season's biggest question isn't who killed the victim — it's whether these two can stand each other long enough to solve it.

Our Take

Lanterns Review — First Impressions

This section is our rolling review: we update it every Sunday after each new episode airs.

Episode 1 sets a deliberate, smoldering pace — this is clearly a slow-burn detective story wearing a superhero ring. Chandler's Hal is exactly as frayed as promised, and Pierre's Stewart walks in with instant authority; the chemistry is less mentor/student and more two rivals forced into the same cruiser. If you came for space battles, the premiere withholds them; if you came for dread, atmosphere and a genuinely intriguing central death, it delivers.

We'll keep this page updated with episode-by-episode scores and the season verdict as the mystery unfolds.
